On Saturday, April 21st, from 12pm to 10pm, Plymouth State Universitys student organization Common Ground held their 10th annual Earth Jam. Many students dropped by to soak up the sun on Alumni Green, and listen to the live music. It’s a time where students can get away from their academic stress to enjoy the Earth and hang out.
Students really got into the feel of Earth Jam, letting out their inner hippie and swaying to the beat of the music. Some of the bands that played were The Trichomes, Hayley Jane and the Primates, and Swimmer. I can still hear The Trichomes song, “Drinking Whiskey with Your Mom,” playing in my head. PSU senior Eric Halin said, “Earth Jam is pretty rad, I like the live music from the local bands.”
The live music wasn’t the only contribution to Earth Jam. Some of PSU’s talented students from the art department set up shop to sell some of their amazing work. They sold flower crowns, braided bracelets, handbags made from jeans, tie-dye shirts, and mind-blowing art prints. PSU student Nicole Bonica was one of the many vendors at the event, selling her artwork. She had stickers, prints, and shirts that she printed her work onto. Her t-shirts were fteen dollars, colored prints were ten, and the outline prints were five. A total of thirty hours went into her color prints, and her work showed.
The Global Health Club set up a table selling $1 root beer oats, which were perfect for the sunny day.
Nothing goes better with Earth Jam than food. Beverages were $2, and food options included local beef burgers and hot dogs. The menu was mindful to vegetarian students, serving southwest black bean burgers, and roasted beet and kale burgers. They also served house fried potato chips and fried dough. And what kind of New England school would hold a festival without some chowder? Students could get a cup of New England clam chowder or corn chowder for $3.
Last weekend, the sun was out, and it was a perfect time to listen to the music, enjoy some food, and support your fellow students. PSU celebrated our planet by kicking back, spending time with close friends, and enjoying the scenery.
Earth Jam is a fun event, meant to gather the community while supporting local businesses. Those who missed it this year should attend next spring to join in on the festivities.
