Women’s Soccer, Register Earns Fourth Shut-Out
Five games into the season and freshman goalie Elena Register (Helena AL) has only let in one goal this season; against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth last Saturday. After their match-up with Curry College this past Tuesday, Register tallies her fourth shut-out of her young career, ending the game 3-0. Register says “it’s a group effort to win games, coming together as a team and enjoying doing something we’re passionate about with each other” and I couldn’t agree more.
The Panthers dominated this competition, having almost complete control during the game. PSU’s offense was present and giving off shots but just not finding the back of the net. Finally breaking just over 40 minutes in, Lizzy Bloch (Los Angeles CA) was able to get a header past the goalie, just missing it by a few mere inches, giving PSU the 1-0 lead. Bloch received the ball from a corner kick that Sabrina Sweeney (Raymond NH) sent to the far post. That would be one of 18 corner kicks PSU would take, and to show the dominant offense we brought, Curry only took two corner kicks.
After half time, PSU still came out with heat and intensity hungry for another goal. Close calls included the ball bouncing off the post or cross-bar and before the Panthers could rebound it, it was cleared out of the 18. But they couldn’t stop Sarah Hicks (Sutton MA) from earning her third goal of the season in the 59th minute. Again, scored from another corner kick, PSU lifted their lead to 2-0. Curry did get a few shots on goal, total of six, but Register made all six saves, diving at times.
With ten minutes left for play, Kate Martin (Westmoreland NH)made the final goal of the night from, you guessed it, a corner kick. Sweeney made another beautiful kick right to the top of the 6 to head it in above the goalie’s hands. With this win, the Panthers moved to 4-1 record.
Plymouth outshot Curry, over three times as much, 29-9 and Sweeney lead the team with the two assists.
Register was intimidated at first coming onto the Panther’s soccer team, but comments “our team is so positive and hardworking that we’re all really excited and believe in our ability to win the Little East Conference this year.” A lack of experience is something she recognizes but is “surrounded by teammates and an amazing coaching staff who gives me advice and critiques in order for me to achieve my best.”
They step back on Arold Field this Saturday for a match-up against Southern Maine for their second Little East Conference game of the season. Game is set to start for 1 p.m.
