Friendship Revolution
The third annual Friendship Revolution is upon us and is happening on November 15th from 7pm to 11pm in the Hub. It will be a night full of great entertainment, poetry and unity. All proceeds from this event will go towards the Jake Nawn Scholarship that is given to a current student every year. There will be live bands, a raffle, food and book sales as well as an open mic to close off the night.
Friendship Revolution is not only a fun night to partake in here on campus but it is also a celebration of life for Jake Nawn. He was a beloved person and student here at Plymouth State University who passed away a couple of years ago. He was a very popular English major who had a love for writing and reading poetry. Jake was a kind person who looked out for others and made a charming impression on our school.
The name “Friendship Revolution” actually came from Jake himself: when he was here, he and a couple of his friends created a web page for students and called it “Friendship Revolution.” Its purpose was to connect students here at Plymouth State and make it somewhat easier to make friends.
But now, Friendship Revolution is an event and not a web page. However, it does have the same purpose: to gather people together to support and meet each other, all while remembering a great member of our community who is no longer with us.
All the money earned at Friendship Revolution goes towards the scholarship that is in memory of Jake Nawn. Each year the scholarship is given to a current student here. This year’s recipient of the scholarship has already been picked: it was received by Ryan French who has his own love for literature and is also an English major.
“I am very grateful and thrilled to be granted with this scholarship,” French said. Not only is being gifted a scholarship exciting in and of itself, but to be given this scholarship in particular seems to be a great honor. This scholarship and event is a way to feel like Jake is still with all of us here at Plymouth State.
Jake's mother Marta Ferreira stated, “We want to keep doing this every year, Jake loved this place and we do too. When we cross that bridge every Fall for this event, it brings a feeling of coming home to us. This event and this scholarship is making the most out of what has happened and turning it into something beautiful.”
Please come and join us in the HUB on Thursday Evening. There will be something there for everyone, and it will be a great-get together here on campus, so please do not miss out!
However, if there is anyone who can not make it but still wants to show their support for our community, Jake and his family, Jake’s mother has said that there is a special coffee order that is only made down at Café Monte Alto. The beverage is called “The Jake coffee.” The coffee is made exactly how Jake liked it when he was here with us, and if you ask for it, they will make it. This is just another way to remember Jake and the love this place had for him.
