Rush Greeks
Many students may have seen the posters around campus for different fraternities and sororities having events called “rushes.” But many students might not know what it means to rush a fraternity or sorority.
Noah Fiske, a Plymouth State Sophomore and Recruiting Chairman of Sigma Pi Fraternity said, “A rush is an event hosted by a fraternity or sorority for potential members to meet current members and vice versa. This allows the person rushing to get an idea if that fraternity or sorority is the right fit for that student.”
If you are already interested in fraternity and sorority Life on campus there are many places that you can find out these recruiting events, “There are flyers and posters all around campus, or Plymouth State Greeks, to learn more about when events will be hosted. You can also go to an organization's Facebook page,” said Fiske.
Rushing a fraternity or sorority isn’t a commitment to that organization, “We recommend rushing a few different organization to make sure you want to be in that fraternity or sorority, so you really know it’s the right fit and right group of people.”
There are many reasons that people might be nervous to join a fraternity or sorority but Fiske says “Sigma Pi itself has a zero-tolerance hazing policy along with hosting all our events on campus. There also won’t be any alcohol at any of the Sigma Pi events. We hold our members to a standard to treat everyone with respect, and dignity, that we take very seriously.”
There are lots of events that students can get involved with for rushes like a meme night, game night, or rag to riches, which is a charitable clothes drive. Fiske says, “At least check them out, even if you're not sure, you might be surprised at what you find.”
If you are looking to be a part of a community here on campus, Greek Life is a great place to start. Stop by the Fireplace Lounge to see the different organizations to rush.
