Prostitution is Human Trafficking

With the Robert Kraft scandal breaking headlines and making people rethink the owner of the Patriot’s values, a large piece of the story was missed. That’s the story of the prostitute. Not many people have considered this perspective and need to realize that this woman was a victim of human trafficking. 

Human trafficking has three types of sub-categories: sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and child trafficking. In this instance, it would be sex trafficking and labor trafficking combined because this woman is technically working within the states. Many of these victims have little to no control when it comes to their hours or if they want to even work at all. They are expected to meet the expectations set by their owner or pimp. Also, they need to acquire clients and money to guarantee their safety from said owner. If these victims don’t meet these expectations then they are often abused physically and forced to work harder, staking on more clients than they can handle.

When news broke out about Kraft and the scandal behind the Patriots, many people laughed and poked fun that the old man could “use some action”. Nobody was thinking of this as a case of human trafficking. Fittingly, the top location in America that hosts human trafficking is actually at the Super Bowl, with 750 people being arrested at 2016’s Super Bowl for human trafficking. Although not in the traditional way most people think, Kraft should be arrested for his actions because he was a contributor to human trafficking. 

On social media, many people are protesting Kraft and his arrest, but they need to do more research on the subject and realize this wasn’t just a one-time thing. More often than not these are repeat offenders with a history of crime involvement. I want to know who is the prostitute and what they have to say. The victim has not made a statement, nor have they been identified, for obvious reasons. To make a fully educated decision on the situation people need to start considering both sides, not just Kraft’s. 

The situation has escalated quickly because of Kraft’s public nature, but many times only one story is heard, and that’s Kraft. Before posting on the subject or making a side remark, all I ask is that you do more research on human trafficking and the effects it can have one someone physically and mentally. It’s likely that the prostitute was also arrested. But for what, being a victim?
