The Charming Serial Killer
Do you like creepy and eerie stories? Do you like to binge watch TV series like it’s your day job? Do you need a new show to delve into? If you said yes to all questions presented, then you should go and watch Netflix’s new show, “Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes.” The show is a four-part docuseries that follows the journey of Theodore Bundy and all his allegations. The docuseries used more than 100 hours of interviews to create this four-part series. If you haven’t heard of Ted Bundy, he was one of America's most notorious serial killers. He was also a kidnapper, burglar, rapist and necrophile, who is a person that is sexually attracted to corpses (creeeeepy and gross). Bundy was charged with assaulting and murdering numerous young women and girls during the 1970s and possibly earlier. After more than a decade of denials, he finally confessed to 30 homicides that he committed in seven different states between 1974 and 1978.
The series really allows you to take a trip into the disturbed mind of the heinous serial killer. The series shows real footage, interviews and voice recordings of Ted Bundy throughout all his trials when he was in jail and out of jail from escaping. Joe Berlinger, an American filmmaker, was the mastermind behind this eventful docuseries. The previously-unheard conversations, interviews, and tapes are the foundation upon which Berlinger builds a stirring recap of the infamous killer’s upbringing, and prosecution, which spanned numerous states, resulted in over 30 official deaths, involved two separate prison breaks, and ended with a trip to the electric chair on January 24, 1989.
This all sounds SO interesting, right? Of course it does. The fact that someone can get away with such heinous crimes for such a long time takes some serious skill and mastery. Bundy wasn’t just an evil mastermind at work, he was also very charming, handsome and compelling. Bundy was known to cause those around him to swoon, make people feel like they were the only one in the room and could deceive like no other. He has this whole fake perception of who he really was, which allowed him to carry out these crimes for so long. Because of the real footage, which showed the world just how handsome and charming he was, a lot of people started to fangirl over Bundy. Yes, you read that right, people are becoming frenzied and in love with Bundy because of his looks and charm. It became this big uproar in pop culture and social media outlets, as to how Ted was “so hot.” Netflix became angered and ashamed that their docuseries was triggering all these people into finding a serial killer, “handsome, sexy, charming” and more. Bundy’s “hotness” became such a big controversy that Netflix took the stage in a tweet, saying, “I've seen a lot of talk about Ted Bundy’s alleged hotness and would like to gently remind everyone that there are literally THOUSANDS of hot men on the service — almost all of whom are not convicted serial murderers.” In other words…Netflix thinks you Bundy lovers are all ridiculous and need to move on to a new mans who isn’t a murder, rapist, kidnapper and necrophile. But hey, if you are interested in learning about that twisted stuff and the psychological study behind serial killers, like me, then go watch these tapes. You won’t regret it. But don’t watch it before bed or home alone…I warned you.
