Women's Hockey and Basketball Seasons Halted
Going back two weeks, the women’s basketball team hosted their last home game in recognition of the seniors on the team. They played against the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine in a final Little East Conference game. Although they lost 91-66 and no appearance in the playoffs, they played one of the best seasons they’ve had in years.
The final score doesn’t do justice as the beginning half of the game was rather close. Even with Southern Maine’s big explosion in the beginning, back to back threes, Plymouth stayed in the game with offensive rebounding. Jess Conant (Canton ME) drained a three and brought the team back alive and right before the two-minute mark in the first quarter, they had pulled themselves out of a large deficit, only down 15-14. The second half continued to be back and forth baskets, one team gaining the lead over the other. But at the half, the dust settled and it was tied at 38. The second half came and it remained close for the first four minutes but with long runs from the Huskies put the Panthers down in the third and they never looked back. The team says goodbye to there seniors; Conant, Debra Morrill (Concord NH), Cassidy Emerson (Concord NH), Liz Shepple (Bolton MA) and Kailah Reeder (Enfield NH).
Dating it back to two weeks ago as well, the women’s hockey team traveled to Castleton University to play in the quarterfinals of the New England Hockey Conference. The sixth-seeded Panthers were going against the third-seeded Spartans, who they had tied in early November and lost to in late January. Both of these games ending in overtime periods, this game was anyone’s to win.
Goals were scored back to back in the first period, only four minutes apart. Senior Brooke Maggy (Los Angeles CA) took advantage of a power play go give them the lead. But it was answered as the puck slipped past our goalie, Emilie Lindqvist (Gullerasen Sweden). The second period would be silent, with some close shots here and there but nothing sticking. Almost eight minutes into the third period, Castleton would capitalize on a power play and stick it in the net to end the Panthers season, as they’d hold them off. The women’s team ends their season with a record of 7-15-4.
