Student Spotlight: Sabrina Siegel
You can find her working in the Writing Center, or outside on a nice day. Second-year student Sabrina Siegel is someone that you can always find with a smile on her face, a positive attitude, and if you’re lucky enough, she’ll even be carrying her beloved pug Jax in a basket.
The Acton, Massachusetts native moved to Grantham, New Hampshire shortly after graduating from high school, and enrolled at Plymouth State University as a Nursing major. After her freshman year, she changed her major to Adventure Education, which she admits was a big change. “It was definitely a big change going from Nursing to Adventure Ed, especially the type of learning. What most appealed to me about Adventure Education was the fact that I would still be able to help others. But, instead of in a hospital setting, I’d be able to give those struggling a meaningful experience, especially the fact that instead of healing in a hospital, I’ll be able to help people heal in a natural setting. It’s amazing because it disconnects people from the technology and really allows the participants to heal and find themselves through nature and a natural experience,” Siegel said.
Not only does she have a passion for her Adventure Education major, but she also loves to write. In high school, she attended a writing camp and even considered pursuing journalism. Although she was interested in writing, she decided to major in nursing instead, knowing that no matter what career she would get into, there would always be time to write. It is hard for her to find time to do so sometimes, but to her, working at the Writing Center makes it all worth it.
In addition to working at the Writing Center, another important part of her life here on campus is having her pug, Jax. He has become a fan favorite to everyone he meets, with Siegel saying that people constantly stop to pet him whenever they are out on walks. “It always makes me happy to see how Jax can give others comfort and happiness. He definitely helps brighten not only my day but anyone who sees him.” she said.
Siegel almost decided to take a year off after high school but is glad she didn’t. She is happy to be up in the mountains, where she can appreciate the outdoors more. She credits her professors, saying she wouldn’t be where she is today without them. In her two years here so far, she feels as if she has met some of the most amazing people, and is extremely thankful she did end up coming to PSU.
