What Do You Have in Your Collections?
Collecting things is something people do all around the world. It can be out of the ordinary, something that means a great deal, or maybe something that simply catches one’s eye. There are many students at PSU that collect an abundance of items. Mary Amenta, a junior at Plymouth said, “It’s a weird thing I do I guess!” To correct her, it’s definitely not weird, it’s normal.
Cassie Blakeslee and Brittany Urban have something in common, they both collect shot glasses. “I just started collecting them, they’re always in gift shops and my mom collects them. My favorite one I have is from Universal Studios in Florida,” said Blakeslee. Urban’s reasoning was almost the same, “I collect them to show where I have been around the world.” People don’t realize that such a small hobby like collecting things can lead to similar interests between themselves and others.
Amenta, who thought it was weird that she collected things, collects probably the most gatherable item, fortunes in fortunes cookies. “I’ve been doing it since I was a little kid. It’s become a habit, I think a lot of the fortunes can be very inspiring, although a lot of them make no sense. I always end up keeping them in my wallet,” said Amenta.
Another junior here, Kelsey Paddol, collected things when she was little but stopped when she got older. “I grew up in Beverly, Massachusetts which is right next to the water so when I was little I would collect sea glass,” said Paddol. She said she wished she still had the collection.
Collin Crane, a junior at Plymouth, collects hats. He’s very specific when it comes to which ones he wants to keep. “I collect hockey hats, preferably snap backs and they have to be older generations, like from the early 2000’s and older,” said Crane.
Clothes and shoes are other things that are collected. A shoe addiction can be dangerous, but Meghan Gregoire agrees to disagree. “I collect converse, I like the colors and patterns that make the same show unique. I have like 20 pairs in all different colors,” said Gregoire. It might be a more expensive hobby but it’s something she loves to do.
Dom Buccieri, a Plymouth undergrad, collects t-shirts and perfume bottles. “I collect perfume bottles because every holiday, usually Christmas, I would get a new bottle and then I wouldn’t want to throw them out because they’re expensive and pretty of course which ends with my collecting them,” said Buccieri.
The Clock’s very own, Features Editor does some collecting herself. “I actually collect movies. It’s a compulsive need to purchase them when I see them,” said Cassie Pearson. She made a good point when it comes to the money aspect of her addiction, “Walmart is a very dangerous place,” she said. This is true for most collectors. Having a hobby like this is very admirable, finding something that means a great deal to that person and treasuring it.
