At precisely twelve O’clock on that calm Wednesday afternoon a siren rang out across Plymouth State’s campus. It isn’t anything to be feared, even for the first year students who were caught very off guard. The overall purpose of the “Alert and Siren test” is to provide students with an easy way to notice, and become aware of any emergency happening near or around campus.
Plymouth State is fortunate enough to have an email, and text alert that can be sent to all students in the vicinity during any emergency. Proper parameters to be taken during this alarm are standard to ones typically seen in a High School. Just stay in one stationary position inside any building be it a dorm, classroom, or a central building like the HUB. Once inside and perfectly safe, just wait until the alarm ceases to continue, or until the school send out the “all clear” text message.
The “Alert Siren Alarm” hasn’t gone off many times over the course of Plymouth State history, but some of the students have some info to give about it. When asked about the alarm and its track record over the years, sophomore Samantha Liardo said: “I remember only hearing it go off a couple of times last year, the first test surprised me the most. Every subsequent time after that, kids were slowly getting used to having the siren go off, especially when nobody can anticipate when exactly they will hear it.” KellyJo Boland, another sophomore, said: “I think the professors get a bigger shock out of the whole thing than us students. I remember twice it went off during my classes, and the professors had to remember what to tell us to do because they didn’t expect anything to transpire during classes. I actually think it’s funny to see the vast difference between the seniors, and the freshman during the siren. All the freshmen start freaking out and looking around for an example to follow, while the seniors just walk around and act cool cause they know what’s really going on.”
So when the sirens are roaring and the first years are cowering, just follow regular safety parameters, and take every emergency seriously! Sign ups for the emergency text alert can be found on Plymouth’s official website, as well as the numbers for University Police, and the University Police alert line.
