First-year student hosts two Radio shows

On Oct. 4 Lucas Davey hosted his first radio show. Now, he’s the only first-year to juggle two shows a week. Davey said he’s already gained respect from WPCR’s seasoned hosts.

“I’ve hung out with the executives a lot, so they know I’m a hard worker,” said Davey, “they also like me as a person, because they see me [outside of] the radio meetings.”

Davey’s Sunday show “Quiet Hours” airs 9 p.m.-11 p.m. His Thursday show, In Your Horse, airs 5 p.m.-7 p.m. The styles of both shows are about the same, except his Thursday show doesn’t play explicit music. This is because of a radio regulation that bans explicit content before 10 p.m.

Davey writes out his playlists ahead of time. His shows often include something by Rise Against (his favorite band), Fall Out Boy, occasionally Josh Groban, Johnny Cash, All American Rejects, The Rolling Stones, DMX, and once, the John Cena theme song.

In a gray beanie and a green fish and game sweatshirt, Davey said he’s a pretty quiet kid. “I keep to myself,” he said.

Originally from Rochester, New Hampshire, Davey said his first semester at Plymouth is off to a good start.

“People are nice,” he said, “my classes aren't as difficult as they make college out to be.” Davey spends his time playing video games and watching Netflix.

Davey played percussion from fourth grade all the way through high school, but he didn’t get along well with the band directors. He’s considered picking it back up, but he’s worried it’s too late.

“I was really good, and I don’t want to get frustrated, because I’m not as good any more,” he said.

Davey originally heard about the radio station on accepted students day. He was looking for an extracurricular activity.

“This seemed like the best thing, because I’m not good with people , [and] this seemed like the least likely to have to deal with people on a regular basis.”

On his first show in Oct., Davey said he forgot some aspects of working the board. “After I got over the initial, like, having to figure out how everything works again, it went really well,” he said.

Davey had his neighbor, John Michelizza, join him as a guest. “It wasn’t as nerve racking, because I had someone to talk to in between, so I didn’t just stress out the entire time,” said Davey.

As for the future of his show, Davey said he would be interested in bringing a band on, or “having important guests that aren't my neighbor,” he said.

“Quiet Hours” airs Sundays from 9 p.m.-11 p.m. “In Your Horse” airs Thursdays 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Listen at 91.7 WPCR, or tune in online at http://www.wpcr.org

WPCR holds meetings on Wednesdays in Memorial 103 at 9 p.m.
