Good To Know: Where's my ride at?

Over the past few weeks, I'm not sure if it has been an increase in laziness or just a need for people to get around town when they can't, but I am pretty sure Plymouth needs a taxi service. Maybe they already have one and I'm blind, but I've never seen a taxi in Plymouth. I have seen people desperate enough to contemplate the forty-five minute wait for a cab from another town to reach them to get home. That sounds like an expensive, bad idea to me.

If Plymouth had a taxi service, first of all, it would make so much money. Do you know how many drunk kids would pay to get a ride home from the bars? Especially after the bars, the price of a drink for a ride home starts to sound like a great idea.

Not only that, it would keep the number of drunk drivers off of the road. People would be less tempted to drive drunk to and from the bars. There would be no reason to risk it if a ride was only a call away.

And this is in the middle of October, when the weather is still nice. We're barely segueing from sweatshirt into coat weather as it is. People are not going to want to walk around as much in the slush after it snows, and will then be even more tempted to drive or want to pay for a ride.

One reason off the top of my head I could think of needing a taxi, especially years ago before I had a car up here, would be for Walmart trips. The shuttle is usually packed and takes at least an hour to return. Often times you're done shopping before then and are just waiting for it to pick you up. Even if a taxi just made Walmart trips all day, I'm sure there would be a number of people happy to pay for a ride.

Some eco-conscious person might be thinking, "This is not a very green solution, Natalie." Hate to break it to you, person living in a fantasy world, but besides the recycling stations you see on campus, not that much recycling is going on in Plymouth. It's just not promoted here as much as it should be. Many off-campus landlords don't provide the service, many shops and restaurants downtown don't recycle… and we just built an ice rink. A beautiful, useful ice arena, definitely… but really we did nothing green for Mother Earth by building it. At least one car running people around would be better than everyone driving themselves individually.

Even another few shuttle buses that you could pay to take you wherever you wanted would be super useful. They could be hybrids, or run on cooking oil! Why not?

I just Googled Taxi's in Plymouth N.H. to make sure I'm not missing something obvious. One result did come up... K&M Taxi in Holderness. So try giving them a call if you need a ride, but as a whole, we could definitely use some more wheels round these parts.
