Here there are no eyes here: U.S. braces for the foreseen economic collapse
Democrats and Republicans have had years to fix a budget for the general United State's government. This would cover spending on everything from student Pell Grants to Medicare coverage.
The deadline has arrived; on Friday April 8th the feuding parties must come to an agreement or the entirety of the US will suffer greatly. The lack of an agreed US budget will lead to all none-essential government facilities and officials being eliminated.
The United States government won't just shut down. Not all at once anyways. The first pieces of the government to go will be what is seen as least needed in the eyes of government officials. Branches of the government such as national parks, zoos, museums, and thousands of government officials will go. Not too long after that Medicare, social security, welfare, and Pell Grants will hit the chopping block.
The United States cannot just go bankrupt, right? Well, yes and no. The United States is already technically bankrupt and trillions of dollars in debt. And you thought student loans were bad.
Still think this cannot be? This has happened a couple of times already in the recent past. A governmental shutdown that could mirror the impending one happened in 1995 and again in 1996.
President Obama has stated his anger with the political parties being unable to settle their differences and come to a compromise, "A budget that could have gotten done three months ago… the delay is due to politics."
The Democrats say that the Republicans are to blame for not taking the offered deal earlier in the fiscal year. Democrats also argue that the Tea Party is putting too much pressure on the Republicans, and that they are getting what they are asking for at the expense of the American people.
The Republicans counter-argue with nearly the same. Saying that they never agreed to a budget early in the fiscal year and that it is actually the Democrats fault for not pushing through a budget earlier in the year when they had the majority vote. Stating that they are acting in the best interests of the American people and that they would need more time to come to an agreement on the budget.
Time has run out.
Government officials are bracing for the economic standstill. President Obama and his officials are looking back to the 1995 and 1996 economies as a template for how to proceed. Along with big businesses are looking into contingency plans as a means to lighten the eventual impact.
Molly Tucker a junior at Plymouth State University was not surprised by the government's actions. She calmly stated, "Its unfortunate, but it's politics." Adding quickly, "It really just shows how our country cannot come together."
Student will undoubtedly be affected. With the Pell Grants already in jeopardy and now with government officials looking everywhere to cut some spending, students will be hit hard. "I'm really angry, if they get rid of Pell Grants then I can't go to school," says PSU freshman Shannon Goodine.
It is impossible to tell where this will leave the United States. All that we can be sure of is that the lower classes will bare the brunt of the burden and it will get worse before getting better.
