Parking Spot Shuffle
Due to phase-one construction of the new Active Learning, Living, and Wellness (ALLWell) Center, the parking lots at the Field House and PE Center will be shuffled around. Students will have from May 2 to May 5 to move their vehicles from the affected lots.
The construction taking place will affect Lots 501, 502, and 503. Lot 503 is currently used for commuter students, guests of the university, and people visiting the PE Center. Lot 502 is currently used as restricted overnight lot, and Lot 501 is a faculty and staff lot.
The changes taking place will leave Lot 503 vacant. It's function as a commuter, guest, and visitor lot will be shifted to Lot 502. This means that students holding a restricted parking pass will no longer be able to park in Lot 502. Students holding restricted parking passes will still have parking available, though.
"We're asking that those students move over to [Lot] 603," said Gerald Evans, the Parking Enforcement Officer for the Plymouth State University Police Department (PSUPD). "That lot is behind the Ice Arena and has plenty of room to absorb the cars from [Lot] 502. [Lot 603] will become solely for restricted use."
Essentially the function of Lot 503 will be shifted to Lot 502, and the function of Lot 502 will be shifted to Lot 603. Lot 503 will remain empty so it may serve a purpose through Spring Fling, Graduation, and the ALLWell construction. It will then be eliminated and turned into practice fields for sports teams.
"Everyone is going to be affected by the change. We don't want to give off the impression that only students are going to be affected by this," said Evans. Lot 501, used by faculty and staff, will also be converted during construction. "This is going to be across the board changes to everyone on the university," said Evans.
The PSUPD has already begun alerting students to the May 2-May 5 deadline for moving cars. "Basically what we want to do is prepare students for the changes due to the construction, and to do it in the least disruptive way," said Evans. "We honestly do not like ticketing students. We understand the burden. If we can do this lot conversion without having to write tickets then it's a win for the students, and it's a win for us."
This is just the beginning of changes that the ALLWell Center construction will bring. "The ALLWell Center construction is going to be multi-phased. It's going to be taking place over a number of years," said Evans. "This is really just the first step of it."
