Dating Disasters

Another Valentine’s Day has come and gone, and for a lot of people that meant going out and having a romantic excursion with their significant other. But if for those who didn’t wwhave any plans for Valentine’s Day, don’t feel bad. When asked around campus to hear about students’ worst dating experiences, one can be glad that at least they did not go on one of these disastrous dates.
“I went on a date with my then-boyfriend. My mom dropped us off at the movies, and for some reason his dad met us there to give him money. He acted all suave when he bought my ticket, even though I had just seen him get the money from his dad. We went to see some cliché Nicholas Sparks romance movie, and we were the only two people in the movie theater. Literally every twenty minutes, he would get up for a smoke break. He would come back reeking of smoke, then go back out again. One time he came back with a soda and a snack and told me he didn’t have enough money to get me anything. I basically ended up watching the movie alone, but at least it was a good movie.” - Sarah B.
“One summer in high school, my school’s hot quarterback, Bubba, messaged me on Facebook saying he thought I was beautiful and wanted to go to the movies with me. We went and saw the Blindside, and before going in he warned me, “If you don’t understand anything football related, just let me know.” Five minutes into the movie he shoved his face into my boobs and started kissing them and sucking on my neck. I got scared and made up an excuse to leave, then came back and told him I had to go because my dad was in the hospital. He asked me to be his girlfriend and I panicked and said yes, then when I got home I messaged him on Facebook and told him I was moving in a few days.” – Marissa D.
“I went on a double date at the Grille with a guy I had a crush on. I knew he was shy, but he wouldn’t even look at me or talk to me, he would just nervously laugh and only talk to my friend’s boyfriend. My friend kept giving him subtle hints that he should talk to me, but he didn’t get it. Finally she outright grabbed my hand and put it in front of him, hoping he would get the hint and hold it, but instead he just gave a panicked laugh and said she was being too forward. The date was so excruciatingly awkward that my friend ended up having to do the fakest yawn ever and say she was tired so that we would have an excuse to leave. And then after we were outside, I started complaining to her that that was the worst date ever, only to realize that my date was behind me still in hearing range.” – Brooke R.
“I dated a girl in high school who was really sweet and cute. I knew her family was super religious, but I didn’t care. Then one day her older sister saw me and her holding hands at school and she freaked out. The sister told her parents that we held hands, and apparently it was a big deal because the next day my girlfriend called me and said her parents wanted me to come over for dinner so they could meet me. They picked me up that night and I was ready to go, but instead of taking me to their house they brought me to their church for a youth group meeting. It was awkward, and I couldn’t just leave because I had come in their car, so I just sat through it.” - David L.
“I used to have a HUGE crush on this guy. I was good friends with one of his friends, so I was always trying to get him to set us up. Finally he arranged for us to have a double date to go to the movies. I was so excited, but I found out the day of the date that my crush had invited two of his friends to come with us. Then when we got there, he wouldn’t sit next to me. Everyone there knew I liked him and made it so that I was on the end and he would have to sit next to me, but no, he sat four seats down from me. He would’ve rather sat alone than next to me. I realize now that he probably didn’t like me.” – Amanda G.
