Free Flu Vaccinations Offered to PSU Students
Northern New Hampshire has always had a reputation for its notorious winters. From its freezing temperatures to its substantial snowfalls, winter here is not something to be taken lightly.
As we anticipate the approach of various activities synonymous with winter such as skiing, snowboarding, and, for the more daring students, winter hiking, we need to be aware of the fact that this is the prime time for sickness to clutch us in its grasp. As the cold season rapidly approaches, it is very important that students make sure they are properly prepared to take on the unavoidable viruses that accompany it. Specifically, students should protect themselves from the seasonal virus influenza, otherwise known as the flu.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the flu affects one out of every five Americans each year, and deaths from this virus can range from around three thousand, to an astonishing high of 49 thousand people. So what makes this virus so dangerous, and why are we so susceptible?
According to MayoClinic.com, flu viruses evolve at an extremely rapid rate, and therefore last year's vaccine may not necessarily protect you from the viruses that will circulate this season. Clearly, it is important that everyone get vaccinated if it is available to them. For extra protection, it is stated that "This year's annual flu shot will offer protection against the pandemic H1N1 flu (swine flu) virus, in addition to two other influenza viruses that are expected to be in circulation this fall and winter" (Mayo Clinic).
It is a great benefit to have flu shots available to the student body for free, especially on a college campus where everyone is grouped together in classrooms, dorms, the dining hall, and other places where germs are easily transferrable. If you have the opportunity to protect yourself, why not seize it?
Freshman Victoria Brochu, who is obviously new to campus offerings, was happy to hear that free vaccinations were available at Health Services. She stands with logic stating that, "If it's free, and will help me stay healthy this winter, why not?" Although flu shot clinics already took place last Thurs., Sept. 22 and this Wed., Sept. 28 at Health Services, for those who agree with Victoria but missed out on these dates, you haven't missed out completely.
Edna Merrill, Supervisor of Nurses at Health Services, said, "If there is extra serum left over, a third clinic will take place." Also, it is the hope of Health Services to receive another batch of vaccinations in the near future, and notification of those clinic dates and times will soon be announced following their arrival.
It is the responsibility of students to keep themselves healthy, and amenities such as free vaccinations are an ideal way to maintain that health. The student body is reminded that these vaccinations are given out on a "first-come, first-serve" basis, so don't hesitate if you plan to get vaccinated.
To have any questions answered about future vaccination dates and/or locations, or about influenza in general, contact Health Services at (603) 535-2350. In order to enjoy all that Plymouth offers this winter, take full advantage of this opportunity and stay healthy!
A free flu clinic for students will be held on Thursday, October 6, 12:00-1:30pm at Health Services, 16 Merrill Street.
