HUB Celebrates its 20th Birthday
Everyone should get a birthday party, even if that someone is a building. The Hartman Union Building celebrated its 20th birthday in style on April 6th at 1:00pm. The event included free cake, a visit from Pemi the Panther, a photo booth, and a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” led by the student a cappella groups Mixed Emotions and Vocal Order. Floorplans and digital models for upcoming building renovations were on display as well.
Plymouth State has had a college union on campus since the early 1970’s but the HUB had its official grand opening on April 6, 1995 right after spring break. It was named after Van A. Hartman, dean of personnel at the University from 1961 to 1968.
“[The HUB] has been a silent witness to mourned losses, celebrated joys, debated controversial topics and a slew of presidential hopefuls delivering their pre-primary stump speeches,” said Terri Potter, Assistant VP for Student Affairs. Every student has been inside its doors at one time or another, whether it was to get a coffee, practice yoga, or mail a letter. “My favorite thing [in the HUB] is the cardio theatre gym. I use that a lot,” said Miss University Elizabeth Morrissette. “I like the fireplace too. It’s nice to lounge in front of.” According to Junior Grady Arnao, the HUB is a great place to hold meetings. He also likes the bricks. “They’re really nice,” he said. The HUB has housed artists and musicians, open mic nights, campus celebrations, and sports games. The HUB will continue to be a place for students to gather, serving as the center of a dynamic campus community.
