PSU, Annie's final stop on the campaign trail

A politician's work is never done, and Annie Kuster proved that on Monday, November 1st. Less than twelve hours before the official start of Election Day, Kuster made a quick stop at Plymouth State University to rally students to the voting booths on Tuesday.

"You hold the margin of victory," Kuster told those who attended the free event in the HUB on Monday evening. Kuster spoke to the crowd with energy and enthusiasm, urging students to get to the polls. "On Tuesday, the students of Plymouth will tell the country that democracy is not for sale in New Hampshire," said Kuster, to which the crowd replied with vigorous applause.

Kuster was running for a seat in the House of Representatives in NH District 2 against Republican Charlie Bass, a House veteran, in the first open race in the district for 22 years. In an open race, there is no incumbent candidate. If Kuster had won, she would have been the first woman to represent the district (Source: nashuatelgraph.com).

At the event, Kuster laid down her campaign's focal points. "My campaign is all about kick-starting New Hampshire's economy and creating jobs. I'm fighting for the middle class."

Kuster also explained the Democrats' plans to ease the financial burden of tuition costs and student loans for college students. Whereas "Republicans want to cut funding for Pell Grants," she said, the Democrats had intentions of passing some sort of legislation to cap student loan payments at 10% of the student's income. "Never again should a student have to leave college because they can't afford it," Kuster said.

Adding to her plans to re-energize the economy, Kuster affirmed the two other issues she was most concerned with. First, she professed that she was "passionately pro-choice," and that she believed there should be less government interference in the matter. "However you come out on the issue, I'm sure you don't support the government making that decision for people," she said.

Secondly, Kuster briefly expressed her opinion on the current military strategy. She said that the country needed to develop a counter-terrorism mission that was narrower than the current war. "We need to coordinate our intelligence."

Annie was a hit amongst students at Plymouth on Monday, but didn't seem to have the same effect on all the voters in District 2. Kuster lost the House seat to Bass by less than 5,000 votes – about the size of the student body at PSU.
