Legends of the Haunted Residence Halls

Tis' the season of ghost and goblins, and what better way than to shed a little light on the few 'friendly' ghost we have here at Plymouth State? It goes without saying that the dorm halls here are very old, and yes, very creepy. As a third year student, I've not only had the pleasure of entering what are believed to be the two most haunted dorm halls on campus, Mary Lyon and Blair Hall, but also lived in what I consider by far one of the most petrifying residence halls on campus--Samuel Reed Hall.

Many times, late at night I found myself slowly creeping up the stairs in the old run down building, once used as the Library, telling myself that any noise I heard would be just someone on the floor above me or in the rec room. This could be true although the rumors of the building are just too hard to ignore especially as a resident. Many have reported an uneasy presence among them well being in Hall-Hall, as well as weird noises and footsteps coming from the fourth floor, which is blocked off from residents.

This goes hand in hand with reports of a male ghost in a plaid shirt being spotted wandering through the halls, rumored to have hung himself coincidentally on the same floor that has been blocked off to the public. People have also reported seeing a punching bag, swaying back and forth, as well as the sound of balls bouncing right outside their door.

However, the ghost of Hall-Hall compares nothing in notoriety of the two lovers trapped between here and the afterlife in Mary Lyon and Blair Hall. As the legend goes, Mary Lyons was truly in love, constantly meeting with her lover in the now blocked off tunnels previously used for students in the winter to stay warm well walking between classes. It has been told that one night when Mary Lyons was going to meet her lover in the tunnel, it collapsed, killing both young students.

It is said that the heartbroken Mary Lyon still maliciously haunts the basement of Mary Lyon, making students who ever enter the basement feel very uncomfortable. Students have also reported often hearing strange noises coming from the basement as well. It is further rumored that the spirit of Mary Lyon's lover is trapped in Blair. They are unable to reach each other, and it may be the reason why they still roam Plymouth State after all these years. Sound a little too true for you to believe? To be honest, no one said this was true, but keep it in mind next time you see a light out in Blair, or hear a sound coming from the basement of Mary Lyon. You might not be alone. After all, Plymouth isn't just your home.
