Plymouth's Great Outdoors
A look at the Outdoor Center
Just because water skiing or a day at the beach is out of season, doesn't mean you can't enjoy other outdoor activities. With fall foliage right around the corner, it's important to know when, where and how to still enjoy the outdoors. Plymouth State University's Outdoor Center provides the community with sponsored trips, training, and a wide range of outdoor equipment.
The Outdoor Center is located in the White Mountain Apartment Complex, student appartment #31. The Center is available to PSU alumni, students and staff members Monday through Thursday 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. With the completion of a simple form, including student name and ID, the Equipment Use Program allows free rentals of equipment for the activity of your choice. Not sure how to dress for the occasion? Visit the Outdoor Center link on the PSU website to access information on what to wear and what to bring when you check out the list of equipment.
If you're not familiar with the student organization, one of the featured activities includes Monday afternoon hikes at 3 p.m. The Outdoor Center sponsors community clean up hikes to local trails around campus. This is an effective way to keep active while doing something beneficial for the community. If hiking isn't your thing, the Center is engaged in Student Outdoor Adventure Recreation (SOAR). This program allows the community to experience their favorite outdoor hobbies and the opportunity to try something new. The White Mountain Orientation Trip is a great experience for out-of-state and first year students or anyone looking to better connect to the environment with their peers. Fun for the whole student organization, athletic team, or residence hall, the New Horizons trip is a great way to build team bonding and promote development within your organization. The Trip Program is an instructed program permitting students to explore surfing, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, camping, biking and more! This is a great way for new and returning students to connect and experience the great outdoors together.
The Outdoor Center is a student run organization, which enables students to not only participate in the outdoor recreations, but the opportunity to lead trips if comfortable enough with any given activity. The Outdoor center is always in need of trip leaders and new ideas. Any enthusiastic students who are comfortable in an outdoor setting should check it out. If you have any ideas for the Outdoor Center, the program is always looking to expand their horizons and could make your new idea a reality for the program. Keep up with the Outdoor Center and their weekly activities at PSU-Outdoor-Center@plymouth.edu or follow them online at OrgSync.com, Facebook, and Twitter. With any specific questions, comments, or concerns, contact the Outdoor Center promotion coordinator Kate Preston at kwpreston@plymouth.edu.
