The Silver Center For The Arts 2015 Fall Preview
The three performance venues in PSU’s lovely Silver Center for the Arts are booked with a number of performances this fall to entertain, surprise, and inspire. A lineup of guest artists are scheduled as part of the Silver Series, including the return of hypnotist Michael C. Anthony on Oct. 3 during homecoming. Funny and a bit surreal, students may have seen Anthony during welcome week earlier this semester.
On Oct. 20, humor writer David Sedaris will speak in the Hanaway Theatre. Sedaris is author of many essays and satire pieces, including his recent bestselling collection of essays Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls. The audio recording was nominated for a GRAMMY award last year.
On Nov. 13, singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier will perform powerful, personal songs, many inspired by her complex past.
The PSU Theatre Department has a funny and disturbing season in store, starting in the Studio Theatre with Silvia, a love story about a man and his dog (Sep. 30, Oct. 1-4). Next is the musical comedy The Wedding Singer, based on the 1998 Adam Sandler movie and chocked full 80s style music (Oct. 15-18). They finish off their semester with Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party, an absurd play set in a seaside boarding house, where it may or may not be someone’s birthday.
The PSU choirs have two big shows coming up: Songs of Protest, in which they will be joined by 200 high school singers from across New England (Nov. 5), and the holiday concert A Joyful Noise, performing Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with the Manchester Choral Society and Orchestra (Dec. 6).
The Contemporary Dance Ensemble will showcase original choreography by PSU faculty and staff in various styles on Dec. 4 and 5. This once-a-semester show always brings something new and exciting to the stage.
Plymouth’s instrumental ensembles are performing all over the place, starting with the Plymouth State Symphonic Band Fall Concert (Oct. 26), followed by Jazz Ensemble and Combo (Nov. 12), the All New England Band Festival (Nov. 23), and Percussion Ensembles (Dec. 9).
The Recital Hall will house the annual Eagle Pond Authors’ Series. Admission is free. Its next guest is poet and author Fanny Howe (Oct. 29), who published many books including her most recent, Second Childhood, a finalist for the National Book Award.
There are even more faculty, gust, and student shows happening this season. The Silver Center’s website has more information on shows, times, and ticket prices.
