The Plymouth State football team dropped their third game of the season against MASCAC competitor UMass Dartmouth last Saturday by a score of 29-13. Corsairs wide out Jakarrie Washington led both teams in yards, accounting for 190 all-purpose in the home win. Plymouth’s freshman quarterback Zach Edwards (Brookefield, Mass) had a tremendous game, connecting on all but four passes (21-25) and threw for 176 yards with a passing touchdown included.

The Corsairs had it all over the Plymouth State defense, generating nearly 500 yards of total offense. The run game tore through the Panther gaps; Washington ran for 112 yards on just six carries, and his teammates pushed in four rushing touchdowns, including two from quarterback Cory Burnham.

Starting with possession first, UMass Dartmouth took less than four minutes off the clock, marching down the field and scoring on a QB sneak on fourth-and-one. After an unsuccessful two-point conversion, the Panthers took their only lead of the game. The drive started with a 20 yard run from Edwards, and after being awarded a 15 yard penalty pick-up, the Panthers scored five plays later on a one-yard run from Andrew Reardon (Rockland, Mass).

At the end of the half, the Corsairs would run away with a 22-7 lead. The offensive manhandling started with a 73 yard end-around by Washington that would eventually set up a third down score from the Panther 2-yard line. The Corsairs would score next on a blocked punt by Jon Biggs. After a Panther three-and-out, the ball was deflected and rolled through the back of the end zone for a Corsair safety. UMass Dartmouth would score during their next possession, which was sparked by a 40 yard hookup between Burnham and Washington.

At the 11:51 mark in the third quarter, the Corsairs would find the back of the end zone for the final time when Stephen Roy ran it in from the three yard line. Plymouth’s defense held the Corsairs the rest of the game to small gains, with the biggest one coming on a Washington rush in the fourth quarter for an 18 yard pickup.

Plymouth would score for their final time in the fourth quarter, where they started the drive at their own 44. On the first play of the drive, they would find Corsair territory; the play, and 23 yard hookup between Becker and Edwards. Edwards would later find freshman wide out Brandonn Drumgole (Mt. Sinai, NY) for a one-yard touchdown completion.

The Panthers were limited to just 58 yards on the ground, and 234 yards overall. Despite the loss, they chewed up nearly 37 minutes on the clock, whereas UMass Dartmouth possessed the ball for 23 minutes. The Panthers look to bounce back with a home win this Friday against MASCAC contender Westfield State. This weekend is also homecoming weekend for Panther athletics, so make effort to stop by for a day full of activities.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 o’clock.
