In a game that had all the makings of a straight set victory, the Plymouth volleyball team suffered a near-nightmarish loss to Rhode Island College, losing the last three sets for the second time this year to the Anchorwomen. Kelsey Lace led the evening with 24 kills, with the help of Megan Armburg’s 24 digs.
Rhode Island’s miscues allowed Plymouth to run away with the first set, winning 25-17. As the game progressed, RIC’s hitting progressed with it. Hitting .147 in the first two sets, the team began to heat up, hitting .323 in the third, .385 in the fourth, and .625 in the fifth and final set, with 11 of the 15 points coming off kills. Plymouth hit .177, connecting with 50 kills on 164 attempts and 21 errors.
Tied up going into the fifth, Plymouth stayed close, but could never get over the hump. “RIC got up on us 5-1, 6-2, and we battled back,” said coach Chris Kilmer. “It got to a point where we were trailing 11-10, and I knew that if we could just tie things up, all momentum would have shifted.” Plymouth never got to that point, however, and the Anchorwomen ran away with the final set, winning 15-11.
Plymouth was led offensively by Dani Tabor (Olympia, Wash) with 18 kills, and teammate Claire Sporer (Medford, Oregon) added 11 kills and had a team high 19 digs. Bri Wojtas (Salem, NH) and Mikki Taffe (Sandown, NH) combined for 7 blocks, with Taffe recording a game high with four. Kirsten Perrotta (Hudson, NH) recorded 43 assists in her final match in a green-and-white uniform.
The team finished with 22 wins, and their 22-6 record was their best in four years.
