It was frigid outside, and freezing rain made the streets nearly impossible to maneuver by car or foot, yet a few brave souls ventured out to gather at American Pie Pizza located in downtown Plymouth Tuesday night for their weekly open mic.
With a small crowd of about six people, the atmosphere of American Pies open mic night felt familiar and cozy. Performers and spectators appeared to be familiar with one another, singing along, requesting songs, and warmly conversing all the while.
Musicians played roughly three songs a piece, sipping on a few beers in between sets. The welcoming atmosphere left no room for reservations as each musician passionately preformed. In the middle of her set, one guitarist said, “I haven’t played in so long. It feels good to be here in public.”
The host of American Pie’s open mic night, Jim Tyrell, commented on the performers. “We’re just trying to be a place for local people to be able to make their own musical statement,” he said.
The co-owner of American Pie, Sasha Euns, said their open mic night has been a constant since their opening roughly a year and a half ago. Generally, their turnout for open mic night is more abundant in the summer. Sasha and her team agree that it’s important to encourage participation. “We love to have everybody.”
With advertising happening mainly by route of Facebook and the occasional posting in the penny saver, Tyrrell suggests liking their Facebook page for updates. He encourages college students to participate. “I’ve been to the open mic at the HUB, and there’s always such great talent at the college. This is definitely a welcome place for that,” he said. “If there are any budding songwriters up at the college, this is a great place for people to hear their work and for us to put it online, on YouTube, or to have it broadcasted on the Pemi-Baker community station.”
