The Student Art Collective is a student organization on campus that focuses on art related activities. They hold workshops and events, as well as volunteer in the local community.
“The Student Art Collective is a group of students, art and non-art majors, who gather together to do activities such as volunteering at the Pemi Youth Centre and creating a holiday float for the Plymouth Parade,” said club president and treasurer Denis Mwaura, a sophomore art education and art history major.
The float for the Plymouth Parade is rode in by the University President every year and is built and designed by the Student Art Collective.
Sarah Bengtson, a junior graphic design major and marketing minor said, “We plan our theme ahead of time and then spend a whole day working in a garage with our team, cranking art and popping munchkin donuts.”
The organization also makes clay bowls for the “Empty Bowls” event downtown. The event raises money for the Plymouth Area Community Closet and Student Support Foundation Food Pantry.
“The coolest part is that we got to take canoes out onto the Baker River where we paddled to a spot and harvested our own clay. Nothing better than playing in the mud and river while taking in the beautiful fall foliage,” said Bengtson. “Nothing is better than surrounding yourself with people that inspire you.”
The Student Art Collective meets Mondays at 7:30 p.m. in the Collins Gallery, on the second floor of D&M. They are currently looking for people to hold positions in the club. They are looking for a treasurer, secretary, and vice president. Denis Mwaura can be emailed at dmm2018@plymouth.edu for further information.
