For the first time ever, Plymouth State University is introducing co-ed rooms. Due to lack of space, the new residential building being built, and the ginormous incoming freshman class, The Clock was told that administration literally “had no choice.”
Several residence directors have emailed students about how tight space is getting lately, and so this news is still developing as we write. As of Thursday, students were told “there are no more full White Mountain and non-traditional apartments, Langdon Woods suites, Langdon Woods doubles, Mary Lyon quads, Mary Lyon female doubles, or single rooms available for selection.”
Residential life has not released a statement about the issue, but informed The Clock that they’re working ‘around the clock’ to get things situated.
“Everyone needs to simmer right on down,” said Larbara BaJeunesse, Administrative Assistant. A student in her office noted that nobody should really care too much about living with the opposite gender.
Stanford University is noted as having the first co-ed rooms, although the rooms themselves housed three people, not two. It should also be noted that the White Mountain apartments house two males and two females, but never an odd number.
“This really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone,” said PSU president Ronald Dirx. “With the amount of students we’re bringing in next year, we’re already considering putting beds inside the Belknap bathrooms.” When told that this would probably be a health hazard, the University noted that they’ll “take the fine and move on to bigger things.”
Underclassmen on campus had different reactions. Ned Shneebly stated that he’s “totally down to live with the ladies.” Current sophomore Sam Hopkins said, “That’s a real bold move, Cotton. Let’s see if it plays out.”
Although the guys on campus were leery, there were not many positive reactions from the women. “It’s absurd,” said Molly O’Nauttie. “Anyone who requests to live with a guy as a freshman is super easy.”
Alex Crossley, current Photo Editor for The Clock, overslept and missed her housing meeting last Tuesday. Upon missing the meeting, she was notified that she would be put into random housing, but she could stay in her current dorm of Mary Lyon. “I was okay with staying in my dorm, until I heard this news,” she said. “Now I’m literally scared for my life. What if I get housed with a creep?”
With the new residence hall being built, many new problems have arisen, and the University is firm on the belief that something new like co-ed rooms could solve any problems regarding freshman housing.
The Clock was informed that the new hall could also turn into co-ed by room, with the option of moving from room to room literally when- ever you want to.
“If you don’t want to live with your current roommate, you can pick up your things and move. It’s that easy. This relieves any stress that you might have in your current housing situation,” said President Dirx.
It’s about to get real funky.
The Clock will be following up with an article next issue on the history on Mary Lyon, which is currently being written.
