It seems that there is a lack of trust in this town. Much of the student body, community and police are at a standoff. While many students feel there is an abundance of police force on the streets, violence continues to occur in our neighboring townspeople’s backyards. Yet still, with all of the negativity in the air, there must be something good happening in the community. Here at the Clock, we set out to find an inspirational story that will shine some good light on our Plymouth student body.
What we found was the perfect example of respect, trust and unity. “Parker and Maxwell’s Big Polka Party.” Now it sounds like something you wouldn’t expect to read about in the school paper. However, this Oktoberfest themed party was no ordinary backyard gathering. Instead, the students took on the task to serve for the greater good of this town, by hosting the event as a charity for breast cancer awareness month.
It all started with a vision, to create something that would bring not only students together, but the rest of the town as well. Displaying that students can be responsible while having a good time, without disturbing the peace of this place we call home was a major goal of this project. After Saturday’s success, it’s safe to say the mission has been accomplished.
Raising nearly $200 for the New Hampshire Breast Cancer Coalition, a non profit support organization for families in need suffering from breast cancer, there was nothing but positive attitudes the whole day at 219 Old North Main Street. Even with the plethora of attendees, this gathering remained peaceful. It was a picture-perfect exemplar of how students are genuinely mature and competent to make wonderful choices.
Host and event coordinators Parker Wright and Maxwell Cook released their own statement. “It was a glorious day for Plymouth State University and the Greater Plymouth Area. We truly wanted to prove how grateful we are of this community. After letting all of our neighbors know in the mostly residential area of our planned event, and even reaching out to the Plymouth PD, we figured we had done a good job giving notice and being completely transparent of our event. We believe the upfront honesty was what allowed us to go the whole day without any noise violations or complaints.”
Parker Wright, a senior at Plymouth State University went on to explain that this is only the first step in their overall mission. There is no doubt that having a great time, making lots of friends, and enjoying these four years to the best as they fly by is a huge factor when applying to college. There is also no reasonable way to stop the social aspect of college, however, it is possible to make compromises, bringing things to a state that everyone can agree on. When Plymouth Students Stand for a good cause, everyone wins.
