Film Review: “Manchester by the Sea”
“Manchester by the Sea,” a new movie filmed in Massachusetts, played at the Flying Monkey last week. Rated at a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, this film tells the story of Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) and the shocking surprise of his newly gained guardianship of his deceased brother’s son.
The film is directed by Kenneth Lonergan. In the story, Lee must leave his job, as well as his home, and head towards the sea of Manchester to take care of his nephew Patrick.
Lee has no choice but to move back to his hometown and confront the past that he hoped to leave behind. Back in town, memories flood back from his separated marriage that he had no intention of reliving.
“Manchester by the Sea” is a heartwarming (as well as tear jerking) drama that pulls at the heartstrings and makes viewers feel what Lee is going through. The audience will be drawn in by the unique and witty relationship between Lee and his nephew. There are quite a few laughs that can be shared throughout the movie.
The movie touches upon the small meanings in life, with a big overall message. It makes people realize that family is always there in the end. The movie is relatable to people who have lost a loved one in their life. The pain is felt within Lee and his nephew Patrick.
The Flying Monkey Movie House and Performance Center is a place where students can go to take a break from homework to sit back, relax and enjoy a nice film. “Finding Dory” is coming up on Feb. 28, which tells the journey of Dory and her friends as she goes on an adventure to find her parents.
