Stand-up comedian Amy Schumer has made a name for herself in being unapologetically honest and calling things as she sees it. Her newest Netflix special “The Leather Special,” which premiered earlier this month, is an hour long stand-up show of Amy being Amy. Appropriately dressed in all black leather, nothing in “The Leather Special” is off limits. Schumer discusses her sex life, drinking, drugs and even gun control. Each joke is especially geared to entice that laughter that can only come from someone pushing the envelope.
It’s hard to describe in detail the things that Schumer jokes about on stage while drinking a bottle of wine, because they are best left to her mouth. Anyone familiar with her kind of comedy would be well aware just why that is.
She begins her set by explaining to the audience that “Every comic has one moment where they wear leather and they regret it. This is my moment.”
Her special continues with her explanation of her sexual escapades and drinking binges, which garners laughs.
Schumer also brings some more serious topics to the table. She discusses the importance of positive body image. She talks about the importance of controlling gun violence. She brings up her father’s struggle with MS and how grateful she is to have the ability to walk.
These parts of the special, though brief, stick out because of the power the messages behind them hold. Schumer shows that though she
is by trade a comedian, she is also aware of how to use her voice and platform.
Overall, “The Leather Special” is entertaining and particularly funny. Schumer brings along the same kind of humor she is known for, showed in her film “Trainwreck.”
“The Leather Special” is not something to watch during a study break in the library, but it is definitely something to catch while it’s streaming exclusively on Netflix.
