A Review of Netflix’s “BoJack Horseman”

On the surface, it may seem like just another trivial adult cartoon. Upon actually investing one’s self in the plot line of the popular Netflix series “BoJack Horseman”, viewers realize that the show has a much more serious message for its viewers. The series revolves around the life and antics of BoJack Horseman, a has-been actor from a popular 90’s TV series known as Horsin’ Around. The series follows BoJack along with the rest of his merry troupe, a mix of humans and animal human hybrids. Princess Caroline, his agent who always manages to land on her feet (Perhaps because she’s of the feline species), Todd, his homeless and unemployed roommate, Diane Nguyen, who acts as BoJack’s sullen and realistic ghost-writer, and BoJack’s overly-optimistic and easily likeable rival, Mr. Peanutbutter the Labrador.
While the show seems to take the same ranks as the crude series (Such as Family Guy or American Dad), the show actually displays much more profound underlying messages for its viewers, including but not limited to, drug addiction, depression, both self and sexual identity (more specifically, Todd finally identifying himself as asexual), abortion, and even coping with an elderly family member and their dementia. The series also manages to keep its viewers on their toes, as you never know what is actually happening, and what is actually some drug-induced dream sequence. The show has made itself relatable to a multitude of viewers, millennials and older generations alike, which is what makes it so popular. If you have not had a chance to check it out yet, or have not even heard of it, or have only been able to make it through one episode before giving up, I strongly urge you to give the show the chance it deserves. Especially with the addition of its most recent season to Netflix. You will not be disappointed and you may be brought to both laughter and tears, but you will not regret it.
