The gym; it’s a place you either love or hate. From the sounds of weights banging off of each other, to the feel of iron in your hands. One thing the gym should never be is uncomfortable.
Plymouth State University’s Health and Wellness Club is sponsoring an event every month this semester called Ladies Power Hour. Nicole Workman, a PSU student, said, “It kind of boosted my confidence, because I was a little nervous about doing some of the exercises, especially if I wasn’t the strongest out of the group. So just being able to do them without being judged by others, and just take my time learning how to do different exercises, it just helped a lot.”
Drew Guay, the Director of Recreation Programs, had this to say, “Many women have expressed that the Weight Room can be an intimidating place, so, we thought that offering a Ladies Only Hour may help remove some of those barriers so that women could gain more con dence in those areas in hopes that they could be more comfortable with the area and doing different exercises.”
Ladies Power Hour is a time where women can focus on working out without being afraid of judgement. Those who do not know how to use the machines in the gym do not have to feel embarrassed. Everyone is there to learn. “My favorite part of the Ladies Power Hour was trying new machines I didn’t know how to try at all. It was nice having someone there to tailor what you were doing to what you were looking for,” Workman said. This ongoing event is good for beginners, and for women who would enjoy some private time to work out.
“We had about 45 students attend this event, along with several members of the Health and Wellness Club who also participated to help show students how to properly use the equipment, how to learn different exercises, and how to be safe in the gym,” said Guay.
Workman said, “I have had a small passion for working out recently, and it was a good chance to go into the weight room without any very strong gentlemen who could probably bench-press me, looking at my form and seeing it’s incorrect.” At the Ladies Power Hour, women can work out at their own pace, without feeling inferior to the gym regulars, who work out all the time.
This event is important for women, so that they can learn to exercise in a judgement-free environment. Drew Guay said, “We are excited to offer these programs each month.”
PSU student Amber Lena said, “Our next two dates this semester will be March 28th and April 25th 7-8pm.” Any woman who is interested should come to the next event and join in on the exercise education.
