Opportunity Fair
This year’s Opportunity Fair will be held on Wednesday, November 7, from noon to 3pm in the Hartman Union Building Courtroom. Hosted by the Career Development Office, it is a bi-annual fair, taking place in the fall and spring semesters.
Leslie Blakney, ’07, the new Director of Career Development, is excited for this semester's fair. “I strongly encourage all students to attend, first years and sophomores – this is a great opportunity to explore employers and understand what they’re looking for in candidates which will allow them to better prepare and develop skill sets to make them competitive for future internships and jobs,” Blakney said, “For juniors and seniors, this is a tangible way to seek out internships and jobs.” There is something in this for everyone. It’s sure to be a beneficial use of students’ time.
There are many opportunities to take advantage of at the fair. “It is called the opportunity fair to encompass highlighting multiple opportunities including seasonal, internship, entry-level employment opportunities and graduate school programs,” Blakney said. Internships look great on resumes, and they offer a lot of knowledge in certain fields of study. Juniors who plan on furthering their education are likely thinking about graduate programs now. This is a chance to get a head start looking at good schools and programs.
There will be over 65 different organizations in attendance this year. “We welcome all organizations to come, many organizations and graduate programs seek us out,” Blakney said, “Additionally, we seek out employers where we have alumni working to continue to grow Plymouth State talent in their organizations.”
Students may see some familiar faces, eager to help out as best as they can. “PSU alumni are commonly involved by representing their organization and wanting to come back and recruit Plymouth State talent for their company,” she said. The school is truly a community, even after graduation. Alumni want to work with current PSU students and help them succeed academically. This is one of the many ways to build a community here on campus.
All students are encouraged to attend. There will be people to help coach students on how to navigate the fair and make the most of the event. The dress is business casual. There is no pre-registration or entrance fee, so be sure to stop by and take in some of the benefits.
