HUB to Make Drastic Changes to Fitness Center
PLYMOUTH, NH - Tentative changes are in the works to streamline the HUB workout facilities. While plans are still in the drawing phase, the HUB staff is hoping to bid soon on construction and equipment. The workout facility is currently placed all around the Hub. The new plan will give the workout rooms more unity and space by putting the fitness room, free weights, aerobics room, and showers all in one section of the HUB. Terry Potter, director of the HUB, says the changes will make "the recreation areas more cohesive, instead of broken up." The current computer cluster and billiards room would be broken down into one large room, eliminating the cluster and game tables. That large room would become a fitness room with six new cardio-vascular machines, more customizable weight machines and small dumbbells. The showering facility would be redesigned for two larger showers instead of four small showers, and the aerobics room will remain the same. The assistant director for recreation programs office will be moved across the hall to where the recreations sports desk is, while the outdoor gear rental will be done away with, except for snowshoes, due to lack of space and use of the equipment. The open area within the student organization office suite and the student senate office will be made into one large room by installing a long wall and a door and that will become the new computer cluster. At the end of the mailbox hallway would be the entrance to the fitness center that would make the center into one large section. It also restricts access to people who are not I.D. holders. These changes would create less congestion in the free weights room, in addition to all workout areas. The whole plan, plus equipment, would cost around six hundred thousand dollars. The HUB is paying a significant amount through refinanced bonds. The rest of the money is from student senate granted money and the HUB's renovation and repair plant fund. Terri Potter says, speaking of the plans "It's the best we can do with the space we have to work with at this time, and we believe the re-design will help address the concerns that we've been hearing from students."
