Kanye West presents...Runaway

On Oct. 23, Kanye West premiered his much anticipated art film, "Runaway" to the z"Runaway" confirms that West probably should be masking his voice with a synthesizer a little more. The short film serves as a vehicle to showcase his music for the upcoming album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy to be released on Nov. 22, 2010. 

This film is said to be an artistic look into Kanye's mind. The premise of the film draws from both mythical and colorful attributes both alluding to a parallel of West's career. According to an interview with Kanye directly after the film's premiere he describes the film as a (info from punchbowl site) "parallel of crashing in his career and rising from the ashes." The ‘crash' that he refers to is that of the 2009 VMA's when he stole Taylor Swift's award. "Runaway" is how West believes he has made his comeback. It is evident that Kanye is still bitter about this event when the film's first line is spoken in the movie. "First rule in this world baby, don't pay attention to anything you see in the news."

There have been many mixed ideas and receptions of the film. Some, like Honey Mag, manager Erika Ramirez told sheknows.com it was "pure art" while others do not view it so warmly. In "Runaway," Kanye is speeding down a windy road in the woods when he comes across a phoenix in the road and decides to not only introduce her into our world but also to date her. He claims that this chararacter, played by Selita Ebanks, is slightly based off of every girl he has been in a relationship with... and even his mother. By choosing to portray the phoenix in this light he feels that females will be able to connect with the different emotions displayed by Ebanks in this film.

Though Kanye may not be the best actor, he does have an interesting message in the film. In conversation with Kanye the phoenix states that people like don't like things that they view as ‘different' in this world. She compares this to the world knocking the wings off a phoenix and it turning into stone. The phoenix states that she just wants to ‘burn,' or as the viewers can assume to mean be herself, which is why she leaves.

The film is an artistic representation of Kanye West's career and how his mind has been working since the VMA's last year. He has been a busy man this past year and with the upcoming release of his new film he won't be stopping any time soon. It sure is evident that a lot of time, thought and money have been put into this project. Kanye seems happy with the finished product though others may still be left wondering who's award he's going to take away next.
