PSU Sports Wrap-Up
The Women's Swimming and Diving team finished a strong 13th place in the New England Championships that took place last weekend (between February 14th-16th). Seniors Delia Foley (Londonderry, NH) and Shannon Rogers (Beverly, MA) had strong showings in their last meets as Panthers. Rogers scored 305.90 points in the one-meter diving event, which netted her a 7th place finish, while Foley finished 10th in the 1,650 freestyle event. Junior Sam Carberry (Shrewsbury, PA) had a strong outing as well, as she finished 11th in the 50-yard breaststroke event, and also received points for PSU in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events. The 20-team competition concluded the season for the Lady Panthers, as Foley, Rogers and Jackie Viotto (Morristown, NJ) have concluded their careers in the green and white upon graduating this upcoming May.
Both the Men's and Women's Ski teams competed in the Williams Carnival over at Jiminy Peak in Massachusetts last weekend (2/14, 2/15). The men's team had an extremely strong showing in the giant slalom, as they finished in third place, and were led by Max Martin's (Salt Lake City, UT) 8th place finish. Sophomores Takehiro Watanabe (Sapporo, Japan) and Garrett Quimby (Dunstable, MA), as well as Kyle Farrow (Collingwood, Ont.) all finished in the top 43 out of the 85 skiers who were in the event. For the women, Charlotte Lemgart (Vaerloese, Denmark) finished 23rd out of the 73 skiers, while Mariah Zanca (Camden, ME) finished 40th between her two runs. The Panthers still have one more meet left, as they travel over to Middlebury College to compete in the EISA Championships, which are also the NCAA East Regional event as well.
Underclassmen Chris Perreault (St. Johnsbury, VT) and Clay Callahan (Milford, CT) both won their individual weight classes (165 for Callahan, 184 for Perreault) to finish third in the North Atlantic Championships over at UNH. Perreault's record now stands at 26-5, while Callahan is 14-8. Seniors Alex Gerhold (Derry, NH) and Fred Reisch (Normalk, CT), and underclassmen Kenny Kiriga (Nashua, NH) and Josh Thornton (Rumford, ME) finished second in their respective weight classes. The strong showing for a number of the Panthers should give them a lot of momentum heading into the NCAA Northeast Regionals, which will be taking place on 3/1 and 3/2.
For the Women's Hockey team, not only did they clinch the highest seed in their short history for the ECAC playoffs, but they also defeated a tough UMass Boston team (on 2/14) behind four different goal scorers. Seniors Jane Baruch (Coventry, RI) and Jamie O'Brien (Chelmsford, MA) as well as sophomores Olivia Leon (Natick, MA) and Kelsey Lynch (Collegeville, PA) also scored goals to propel the Lady Panthers to a 4-3 win. Senior Ali Ponte (Richmond Hill, Ont.) had 37 saves in the contest. The following day, Lynch, Meghan Cassidy (Somerville, NJ) and Kelsey Cosby (Walpole, MA) all scored a goal apiece against Saint Anselm, but ultimately came up short, 4-3. What made this game so impressive for PSU is that Saint A's came into the game with three losses, so to play a team that is one of the best teams in the ECAC should give PSU a lot of confidence. The Lady Panthers will play Salve Regina on Saturday (2/22), which should be a very competitive game. Earlier this season, PSU lost in a highly contested game, 4-3. Needless to say, with the momentum that the Lady Panthers were able to obtain last weekend, they should have a good chance at advancing into the ECAC post-season tournament.
