PSU softball lose two in double header
The Plymouth State University softball team went 0 for 2 in their double-header against Rhode Island College on Saturday, April 24 at D&M Park. PSU was shut out in the first game 12-0 and lost the second game by a score of 10-2.
With the losses, PSU fell to 11-16 overall on the season and 3-5 in the Little East Conference. Meanwhile, RIC improved to 24-5 overall on the season and remained in second place in the LEC with a record of 8-2 in conference play.
In game one of the double-header, RIC junior pitcher Amanda Berard tossed a perfect game as she pitched five innings without giving up a hit. Berard would also get some help behind her as RIC didn't commit an error which allowed her to get the perfect game. Berard also had three strikeouts on the day.
With the win, Berard improved her record to 8-3 on the season as she has proved to be a workhorse for RIC all season long.
Junior first baseman Chelsi Panarelli would lead RIC offensively as she went seven for eight from the plate including two home runs and six RBIs.
In game two, RIC senior pitcher Jenna Deveines would pitch all five innings and allowed one earned-run on five hits and two walks.
Panarelli had another solid game at the plate as she went four for four with two RBIs while sophomore third baseman Cristina Bailey also chipped in with a couple of RBIs as she too went four for four at the plate. Senior outfielder Jackie Dube would lead the team with three RBIs while going two for three on the day.
Sophomore outfielder Allie Luisi and junior third baseman Kortney Nedeau picked up PSU's only two RBIs of the day as they each went one for three.
After the game, PSU head coach Bruce Addison realized that his team was simply over-matched. "We just got out played in every aspect of softball," said Addison. "We lost to a much better team and it showed on the scoreboard. We did play better in game two, but RIC simply got the big hits when they needed them."
PSU will try to recover when they travel Maine to take on Southern Maine University on Tues., April 27 in a double-header that matches PSU against the team that is right above them in the LEC standings. PSU will then play two consecutive double-headers at D&M Park on Wed., April. 28 against Middlebury and then again on Sat., May 1 against UMass Boston. It will be PSU's last two home games of the season as they look to make a late season push.
