Panther's Perspective:

The Winners and Losers of the NFL Draft

By Nate Weidman
On April 30, 2010

With the conclusion of the NFL Draft this past weekend, everyone is doing their best Mel Kiper impersonation by trying to declare this year's winners and losers.  I guess I'll do so as well and jump on the bandwagon with this week's Panther's Perspective.
I think the biggest winner of the draft was clearly the Detroit Lions.  As hard as it is to believe, the Lions are actually on the road to getting better after a long decade of being pathetic.  Not only did the Lions get the best player in the draft (In my opinion) when they drafted Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, but they also added some depth at the running back position when they traded into the 30th spot and drafted California running back Jahvid Best.  Kevin Smith (Their current RB) and Best will be one of the better running back platoons in the league a few years from now.  The Lions now have a very young, solid core to build around if you consider the fact that they drafted Matthew Stafford in last year's draft.
Without a doubt, the biggest loser in this year's draft had to be the Denver Broncos.  They used their first pick in the draft to pick a receiver to replace a guy they had just traded away (Brandon Marshall) and they used their second first-round pick to draft a guy that will hardly ever see the field (Tim Tebow).  I am aware that Tebow is a hard worker, but that only gets someone so far in the NFL.  Josh McDaniels is betting his future with the Broncos on Tebow, and unfortunately for him, it's probably not going to work out.
I also didn't understand why the Dallas Cowboys took Dez Bryant with their first pick.  Their two biggest needs are clearly at safety and on the offensive line; and by drafting Bryant, they're only adding to a position they are already stacked in.  This was a chance for Dallas to fix some of their glaring needs and they failed to do so.  They were weak at safety and on the offensive line going into the draft, and they're still weak at safety and on the offensive line following the draft.
On an individual basis, Tim Tebow was obviously the biggest winner.  He went from being a second-to-third round pick a couple of months ago to being a first-round pick simply because he changed his throwing motion.  Tebow will not only see a lot bigger of a payday compared to his financial prospects a few months ago; but he also has the chance to play for a borderline playoff team.  If he surprises everyone and turns out to be a solid quarterback in the NFL, he won't have much competition for the starting job in Denver seeing how Brady Quinn will be his main competition.
