PSU field hockey loses to UMD in overtime
The Plymouth State University Field Hockey team had its two game winning streak snapped when they fell to UMass Dartmouth by a score of 3-2 on Saturday, September 18 at Cressy Field in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts.
With the loss, PSU fell to 2-3 overall on the season with a Little East Conference record of 1-1. UMD improved to 4-2 overall with an LEC record of 2-0. After consecutive losses to start the season to Endicott and Castleton; PSU was able to get to .500 on the season with two straight wins against Salem State and Lasell.
UMD Senior Kellie Ann Finn was the one who snapped PSU's two game winning streak when she scored in the overtime period after PSU had rallied a 2-0 deficit to give UMD the win.
UMD took a 1-0 lead into halftime after sophomore Eleanor Taylor scored off of an assist from classmate Taryn Cardiel to give UMD the early lead. UMD would later pad their lead to 2-0 when Cardiel scored again, only this time off of an assist from Senior Stephanie Kinchla.
Although down 2-0, PSU began a rally when senior Kristina Conroy scored on an unassisted goal to make it 2-1; and for Conroy, it was her third goal of the season off of 19 shots while she tallied her seventh point of the season. PSU would complete their rally a short time later when sophomore Olivia Colborn scored her team leading fifth goal of the season off of an assist from junior Christina Parisi; that proved to be Colborn's team leading 11th point of the season as well.
Both schools saw stellar performances from their goalies as PSU sophomore Hilary Lemelin gave up three goals on 11 shots while UMD first year student Kelsey Gallo gave up two goals on 13 shots. For Lemelin, it was her ninth goal given up this year in a total of 39 shots, which translates to a .769 save percentage.
PSU's next two conference opponents (WestConn, and FSC) currently have a combined record of 6-5 and will be a good measuring stick to see where PSU stands within the LEC.
