Does this spring weather bring on a sudden urge to head over to D&M to check out any fine art?
If so, the 13 senior BFA's have selected their favorite or perhaps most worked on and developed pieces of art to put into the Art Department's BFA Thesis Exhibition. This art exhibition opened last Wed., Apr.  21 and will run a full month closing, May 21 at the Draper and Maynard art building. The 13 students who were accepted into Plymouth State's BFA program displayed pieces of art that included anything from graphic design to sculpture and work with ceramics. This gallery also includes prints, drawings and paintings.
The seniors all display variety in their works showing how they have not only grown and developed their work this past semester, but also in each of their four years at Plymouth. Senior, Ali Urella explains that how important this show is to most of the seniors "as it begins with all of the students submitting two or three pieces of art they are proud of."    From there, the students' professors help to narrow down the pieces and the 13 artists end up with one or two pieces to put into the show. Ali stated that, "The exhibition is a good experience for seniors to see how an exhibition is put together and will learn how to put lighting on their art, how to hang for a show and students will experience giving talks and answering questions on their pieces." Essentially, the senior thesis class has shown these students how to be artists and the final is this exhibition where students really get to see what all of their hard work has culminated.
Upon entering the exhibition one is greeted with an array of colors and a variety of art work. A large sculpture entitled, ‘Growth and Decay' is located on the floor in the front of the room. This intricate and metallic looking sculpture has taken artist, Ali Urella a lot of time and hard work to complete. "Growth and Decay" and Tamara White's stoneware, "Comme les Hommes" were the two works using ceramics at this show.
Artists such as Tyler Hanatow portray a realistic painting of a man about to shoot a musket entitled, "Musket." Others such as Adam Bastille also use oil painting to show beautiful, detailed pictures of clouds.
Katherine Berna portrays paintings of hammers, Tess Barbato uses oil for her painting of ground beef, Elysia Michealsen intrigues viewers with her oil work, "Untitled" and Kristopher Cere catches the eye with a painting of a dangling knotted lightbulb wittily entitled, "Naughty." Both Karen Munro with "Serena II" and Takuya Yoshida with "Golden Birds" show they have become masters of mixing bold and vivid colors in both of their pieces. Patrick Quinn shows us a realistic charcoal drawing of train tracks and Chantal Cote explores mixed media with seven pieces "On Death and Dying." Bradley White shows his skill in using paper: not to create origami but to create paper collages. One of the three he calls "Stick Out Like a Sore Thumb."
These works that are described are only a taste of the Art Department's BFA Senior Exhibition and there are a few weeks left to head over to D&M to take a look. The seniors who are majoring in graphic design will have their art exhibition premiere in the Silver Center on Tues., May 4 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.. Feel free to enjoy the sunny weather and take a walk to support the artists at both D&M and the Silver Center.
