Lady Panthers Split A Pair To Open Season
ENC 78 - PSU 49 / PSU 77 - Elm College 71
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State Women's basketball team split a pair of games to open the season as part of the Comfort Inn Tip Off Classic from Foley Gymnasium. The Panthers dropped Friday's opener 78-49 to Eastern Nazarene College, but rebounded to beat Elms College 77-71 on Saturday in the tournaments consolation game.
In Friday's opener, ENC used double-digit scoring from five players and a strong second half surge to outlast the Panthers. The Lions were lead by the play of Mel Green, who posted 18 points and 13 rebounds to go along with four steals. Jasmine Rodriguez also had a strong game, notching 15 points and nine rebounds. Eastern Nazarene also got help with 11 points from Ace Carradine and Presley Neufeld, as well as 10 points fro Abbie Tonello.
The Panthers, who trailed 13-3 to begin the game and went into halftime down 33-21, were led Krystin Corliss, who scored 15 points with four steals. Katie Seraikas also chipped in with seven points from the charity stripe and a team-leading five rebounds. PSU at one point trimmed ENC's lead to four with just 5:30 left in the first half, but would never get closer.
In Saturday's consolation game against Elms College, Plymouth used a career high 23 points from Krystin Corliss to beat the Blazers 77-71 and take home 3rd place in the tournament. The win was also the first career victory for new Panther head coach Liz Stich.
Katie Seraikas, who added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Panthers, joined Corliss on the all-tournament team. Hannah Andry also chipped in with 16 points.
The game was an intense contest from the beginning, as the two teams played to a 29-29 standstill at halftime. The back and forth play continued in the second half, as the game was knotted 41-41 with ten minutes to play. The Panthers then surged passed Elms, using a 23-8 run to burry the Blazers.
The win improved Plymouth's record to 1-1, and the girls will return to the court on Tuesday as they travel to Castleton State College. Elms will face Anna Maria College on Monday.
