PSU womens soccer blanks UMass Dartmouth
Plymouth 2, UMass Dartmouth 0
The Plymouth State University Women's Soccer team pitched a 2-0 shutout on the road against UMass Dartmouth on Saturday, October 16 to continue their hot streak. With the victory, PSU has now won three of their last four games after going through a tough five game losing streak. PSU now has an overall record of 6-8 and is 2-3 in the Little East Conference. With the loss, UMD fell to 3-12 overall and 0-5 in the LEC.
Junior Sammi Jo Saltalamacchia got PSU on the board with a first half goal off of a rebound off of a saved shot by UMD. Fellow junior Sam Laliberte continued her stellar seaosn when she iced the game for PSU late in the second half when she scored on an unassited goal that put the game out of reach for UMD. For Sammi Jo Saltalamacchia, it was her second goal of the season and also proved to be her fourth point of the year as well. Sam Laliberte only added to her team leading lead in goals as she recorded her ninth goal of the season and her 18th point.
Although PSU got the victory, UMD did have more shots on goal than did PSU but Panther junior goaltender Angelina LaBroad was outstanding as she played all 90 minutes and didn't allow a goal and recorded 11 saves. UMD was able to get seven shots off in the first half compared to PSU's eight but it was a different story in the second half as UMD outshot PSU by a count of 14-3. PSU had five saves in the first half compared to UMD's four and had six saves in the second half to UMD's two.
PSU will look to continue their winning ways as they head down the home stretch of the regular season before heading into the LEC tournament. They next play on Tuesday, October 19 in a home game against Bridgewater State followed by a road game against UMass Boston on Saturday, October 23. They will close out the regular season at home in a game against Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, October 30 at 1:00 pm.
These next few games will be crucial for PSU in terms of seeding heading into the LEC Tournament. As it stands right now, PSU is tied with UMass Boston and Southern Maine for fourth place in the LEC while UMD is stuck in last place. Barring a complete collapse by one of the teams at the top of the LEC, PSU will likely either be the 4th, 5th, or 6th seed. They are currently two losses behind the three seed and is only one loss ahead of the seventh seed.
