PACE hosted a karaoke night on Fri. Nov. 7 in the HUB. There were some technical difficulties with sound, and a couple of tech savvy students made fun of their struggle until someone made them get up and help.
There were plenty of phone calls, electrical wires, and suggestions, which raised the question: how many PSU students does it take to fix a karaoke machine? But in less than half an hour, senior Ashley White kicked off the night with “Do You Want to Build a Snowman,” from the Disney movie Frozen. The rest of the night was filled with a unique variety of songs including show tunes, video game soundtracks, and even a piece in Italian.
There were plenty of brave souls who sang, danced, and played air guitar in front of the supportive audience. “Everyone can sing, just maybe not well. No one is perfect,” said junior Benjamin Ward, VP of Entertainment for PACE. Despite nerves, students with varying vocal abilities were still able to sing their favorite songs.
Freshman Matt Ferland sang “Still Alive,” the credit song from the video game Portal. “I was really nervous. My heart was kind of pounding,” he said.
Other singers felt completely comfortable in front of an audience. “I felt like everyone just loved hearing me perform,” said sophomore Ryan DePaolo, who sang “Magic” by Coldplay and “Love her Madly” by the Doors.
Some students had a remarkable memory for lyrics and were able to ignore the screen, while others ad-libbed through their song choices. “I can’t read that fast,” said one singer during a musical interlude of “It Wasn't Me” by Shaggy, “I didn’t pass second grade lyrics.”
PACE might “look into having more karaoke nights and maybe consider bringing a karaoke band eventually,” said Ward.
PACE meets at 8 pm on Wed. nights in the Student Senate room (room 037 in the HUB).
