No Chief, No Problem
UPD has had some changes occur during this academic year, including the sudden resignation of Former Chief Creig Doyle.
When Frank Cocchiarella, Assistant Director for Student Affairs, was asked about the sudden resignation, he could not say much on the matter. "It's considered a personal employee matter, and the University doesn't comment on that."
While their currently is no Chief of Police at UPD, there are other officers who are filling that void. "Currently the management of UPD is being handled by a team. Lt. Pete Chierichetti, Sgt. Amanda Hutchins and Special Investigator Jennifer Frank," said Cocchiarella.
Along with the change in management, Cocchiarella also spoke about other staff changes happening within UPD. "We also just hired two new officers. In actuality, we are almost at full staff, and we are close to filling the remaining officer and administrative position."
Alongside the staffing changes, UPD is also trying to review some internal procedures. "At this time, we are also reviewing the overall staffing and organizational structure of UPD," said Cocchiarella."We are also looking at best practices in regards to University Police Departments in order to see what we can learn and possibly implement."
Yet while UPD is at almost full staff, a question remains; when will a new police Chief arrive? Sooner rather than later, explained Cocchiarella.
"As of now the current management team is working out well and is helping us as we move to the future. However, the plan is to fill the top position within the next year."
As of now, the UPD is functioning fine with the vacant position.
