More Than A Concert:
Earth Jam's Real Purpose
On Sat., Apr. 28, Plymouth State University students enjoyed a day of peace, love, and solar-powered music at the 5th annual Earth Jam.
For many students, Earth Jam is just a fun Saturday concert where indie bands and vendors come to campus, as well as a time to enjoy the sun and the social atmosphere with fellow students. However, over the years, many students have also noticed the solar panels that appear near the stage during the course of the concert.
Common Ground, the environmental and social justice student group at Plymouth State University, has organized Earth Jam for the past 4 years. Each year, the solar panels have been a mainstay of the event.
Jane Duggan, the President of Common Ground explained the purpose of the solar panels. "Every piece of equipment used on stage is powered by the solar panels. The inputs, the amps, the instruments, it's all being powered by the sun."
By using the solar panels, the overall pollution level and carbon footprint of the event is greatly reduced. Not only does it power the event in a non-traditional and interesting way, it helps to save the environment from more carbon emissions.
Samantha Orlando, a member of Common Ground, explained why saving the environment is so important to all of us. "We all live here. Our survival depends on the Earth's survival. We should do everything in our power to make sure that we can continue to live happy and healthy lives."
