Here There Are No Eyes: Teachers learn to educate without

It is an inexplicable truth that teachers are not in their chosen profession for the money. They are the common, unsung heroes of everyday monotony. They are the people that we pass on the streets without realizing the full impact that they have had on thousands. Whether they inspire a single student to graduate high school or they are the favorite cool teacher, none of us would be here without them.

Teachers are not the only people that are being under appreciated. Any member of a union could lose their bargaining rights if Wisconsin governor Scott Walker's proposals are approved. Gov. Walker proposed the cuts as a means to alleviate public spending. He was only about six weeks into his new position when he made the proposal that has enraged thousands.

Gov. Walker is asking for Union workers to pay increased amounts for healthcare and their pensions. This would cut take-home income by 7 percent. When put into the context of a salary, 7 percent is a large cut to people such as teachers that make very little income in the first place.

Included in his proposal are the means to sever bargaining rights in unions. Coupled with limiting the ability of unions to share ideas about wages: state and otherwise.

Gov. Walker has held his ground simply stating, "We're broke." Gov. Walker urged the need to save an approximate 165 million in public spending. However the people argue that money should be taken from the wealthy, not the poorest sections of the state. Analysts are expecting to see more of in the coming months.

Plymouth State University professor Paul Rogalus thought of the proposal in more economic terms. "…if you taxed the 2-5 percent that have all the money, not unfairly, just equally, it just makes sense. Taxing someone that makes about 30,000 a year versus someone that makes a couple billion. Then its not socialist, its just commonsense."

Some opponents to the proposal also see this as a means to change the way that the governmental system works in Wisconsin. Believing that is really has little to do with the budget of the state.

Wisconsin's capital building has been littered with protesters ever since the announcement of the proposal. People have been camping out in the halls, chanting together and calling-out the governor. All the while Gov. Walker stays in his office without showing remorse.

Wisconsin itself has a long history of union based families. Most of the people cannot simply believe that this is even being proposed. Some argue that if this could happen in Wisconsin it could happen anywhere.

PSU English Education Junior, Sam Reuss commented, "It's not fair. Teachers get treated like crap anyways and now the government is going to make it even harder for us. It makes us feel like the lower class."

Many people have started looking for new jobs, due to the cuts in budget, making it impossible to survive. Long-time teachers and other public workers are simply looking for new jobs to supplement their incomes.

People have voiced their opinions and this needs to be stopped.
