FORT MEYERS, Fla. - The Plymouth State University baseball team took their annual
spring trip to Fort Meyers, Florida this past week and finished the trip with a 5-
6 record. After starting the trip by winning five of their first seven, the Panthers
dropped the final four games of the Gene Cusic Classic.

PSU took on Lasell College in the first doubleheader of the tournament. Jeff
Runnals starred in the twin bill, going 4-for-5 with a double and triple in both games
to help the Panthers emerge victories with 8-4 or and 6-5 victories. Runnals also
pitched the nightcap allowing three runs over four innings.

The next night, the Panthers suffered their first loss of the season, a 6-4 loss
to University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Junior Brandon Cox and senior Dave Tammaro
each drove in runs for PSU, while senior Rew Wilson pitched seven innings, allowing
four runs in the losing effort. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended
by rain, but was continued Tuesday, a game the Panthers narrowly lost 3-2.
The team responded to the pair of losses against UWO by dominating

Southern Vermont College in the tournaments next doubleheader. PSU took the first
game 5-2, with Runnals and Cox again providing the offense. Plymouth also
benefited from strong pitching, as Michael Welch turned in a great start for the win.
The second half of the double header was all Plymouth State. The team cruised to a
13-1 domination of SVC, as Tucker Regan picked up his fist win, while Steve Beard
finished the contest going 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The following Wednesday morning, PSU continued their winning ways in a
dramatic ninth-inning victory over Utica College by a score of 5-4. Junior Zach
Cogswell pitched six scoreless innings of relief for the Panthers, and sophomore Dan
Armstrong piled up four hits, including the game winning RBI the game's final
frame. Armstrong found his way on base in all five of his at bats, finishing with a
double, three singles, and one hit by pitch.

PSU's three game winning streak would come to an end, though, on Friday in
a doubleheader against Otterbein College of Ohio. The Panthers struggled to a 12-4
defeat in the first game of the doubleheader, and dropped the second game 6-5. Rew
Wilson suffered his second defeat of the season in the first game, while Jeff Runnals
finally cooled off in the nightcap, dropping his first start of the young season.
Plymouth wrapped up their spring trip on Saturday, and did so by dropping a
pair of close games to University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. UWO was able to come
back and win in their final at bat in both games, taking the twin bill with 5-4 and 8-5
victories. PSU held a 4-3 advantage in the first game, but the Titans came back for a
pair of runs in the top of the seventh, and held on for the victory. In the second
game, Plymouth had a comfortable 5-2 lead, but UWO rallied for six runs in the
bottom of the sixth inning, and managed to hold of the Panthers in the seventh
frame for the victory.

The Panthers returned to New England with a 7-6 overall record and one
player, Jeff Runnals, having been named LEC player of the week.
