The PSU Field Hockey team defeated Western Connecticut State by a score of 4-1 on Saturday, September 26 at Arold Field.

PSU stopped their losing streak at one game and improved to 6-2 overall on the season and 2-1 in the Little East Conference. WestConn. continued their season long slide falling to 2-7 overall and remained winless (0-3) in the LEC. For WestConn., it was their seventh loss in their past eight games.

PSU junior Kristina Conroy led all scorers on the day with two goals while seniors Cortney Colligan and Sammi Romano each added a goal on the afternoon. Conroy scored her first goal of the afternoon when she scored off of a tip from a shot made by senior Sarah Smith late in the first half. Colligan scored the second PSU goal of the game in the early goings of the second half. That goal would be all PSU needed as their sophomore goalie Elyse Sedgley would make two saves on the day while only letting one past her.

For Conroy, her goals would prove to be her fourth and fifth goals of the season and is now leading PSU in goals scored on the season. For Romano, her goal would be her third of the season and Colligan's goal would be her second.

PSU controlled most aspects of the game, including a 20-6 shot advantage held over WestConn. PSU head coach Bonnie Lord was pleased with the way her team performed and stated after the game "We told the team after the game that is was the best team hockey that we had seen them

play this season," said Lord, "It was a win that they should be proud of as they adjusted position

issues that we had been struggling with and improved the focus and communication on the

field."

For PSU, this is the first time since 2004 that they have started off the year at 6-2 or better and coach Lord attributes the success to consistency, "I attribute this year's start to consistent effort

at improving their individual and team game," said Lord, "By not settling or being satisfied we will continue to be successful. We won ugly for 5 of our 6 wins and played ugly in our 2 losses! We are a work in progress, with a lot of games yet to be played."

PSU will look to make it two straight victories as they travel to Framingham State on Wednesday, September 30 and then will make two more road games against Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, October 3; and then again against Keene State on Tuesday, October 6. WestConn. will look to get their first LEC victory of the season when they play on the road against Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday, September 30th and then on the road again against Keene State on Saturday, October 3.
