Eve 6 and Forging Reverie take the HUB by storm
Eve 6 and Forging Reverie took the HUB by storm last Thursday night and sent the sold-out crowd of 575 kids away happy.
During the frigid, chilly Homecoming weekend, Plymouth's own Forging Reverie and touring Eve 6 made their way to Plymouth State. The two bands played in the HUB courtrooms Fri., Oct. 16, at 8:00 p.m.
Warming up the stage was Plymouth's own Forging Reverie. If you've gone to Plymouth for more than a year and haven't heard this band, please leave your dorm room. The gentlemen in Forging Reverie began with an interesting entrance, starting with only singer Tyler Newton and guitarist Derek Heidemann sharing the stage, before being joined by bassist Ryan Kinghorn and drummer Sean Gregoire and ripping into the chorus of their new song "One Idea."
As usual, Newton was stoic and intense, sporadically bursting into fits of dance and alternately crooning passionately and barking his lyrics. Heidemann was cool and collected, concentrating on the task at hand and ripping the occasional gnarly solo. Kinghorn and Gregoire wordlessly held down the rhythm section. Newton is a true front man and seriously fun to watch. The band is tighter than ever and their live show has improved tremendously since their halcyon days at PSU. Forging Reverie ripped through six songs, including "Satellite Memory" and "Skipping Stones" and left the crowd ready for Eve 6.
The multi-platinum rockers took the stage to a hailstorm of applause and tore into their 2000 cut "Rescue" off of their album "Horrorscope." Eve 6 drummer Tony Fagenson, guitarist Matt Bair and singer/bassist Max Collins, played all their hits including the ballad "Here's To the Night," 1998's chart topper "Inside Out" and "Anytime" from the soundtrack to the movie Out Cold. The band also tossed in a few more obscure cuts like "Friend Of Mine" off of 2003's brilliant "It's All In Your Head." Collins kept the mood light and the energy high the whole time cracking the occasional joke and inducing mass pogoing within the crowd. During "Tongue Tied," Collins even implored the crowd to "Jump like you have air bubbles in your shoes!" Eve 6 treated attendees to a few new songs like the catchy "Little Tiny Everything" and the slow jam "Red & Black" which Collins told the crowd "will break your heart", and it appeared to fulfill that promise, as the band played the song while a sea of lighters and cell phones were held aloft.
Guitarist Matt Bair was certainly fun to watch, jumping back and forth across the stage and jumping up on the drum riser. He harmonized with Collins and deftly strummed and bounced his way through sing-alongs like "Promise" and "Sunset Strip Bitch." One of the set highlights was an excellent medley the band tossed in consisting of their songs "Amphetamines" and "How Much Longer" before segueing into a cover of the Tom Petty classic "Runnin' Down A Dream."
Eve 6 is one of those bands with so many good songs, it's a wonder how they whittle down their set list. Thankfully, Eve 6 classics "Leech" and "Think Twice" were included in the set and played loud and proud as they should be. Eve 6 closed out their set with their classic "Inside Out," inserting a strange bridge in the middle, but finishing it out strong before returning for a brief encore.
Despite an inexcusable dressing room theft where Eve 6 band members' personal belongings were taken, the show went off without a hitch and it was an excellent evening with an excellent band.
