The PSU Men's soccer team defeated Western Connecticut State University by a score of 2-0 on Saturday, October 3 at Panther Field.

For PSU, it was there second win in three games, while for WestConn it was their fourth straight loss and their sixth loss in their last seven games. With the win, PSU improves to 6-4 overall on the season and 1-2 in the Little East Conference. WestConn. fell to 2-7 overall and remains winless in the LEC.

With the victory, PSU is now only one loss out from being tied for third in the LEC. There is a current four-way tie for third place in the LEC with UMass Dartmouth, Eastern Connecticut, Southern Maine, and UMass Boston all at 1-1.

PSU Senior Semir Mehmedovic scored the only two goals on the afternoon for either team. Both of Mehmedovic's goals came in the second half as the score was tied at 0-0 at the half. WestConn. had the early shot advantage on PSU by a count of 7-5 in the first half but that would prove inconsequential.

For Mehmedovic, his two goals on the afternoon proved to be his 99th and 100th career points for PSU. Only two other players in school history have reached the 100 career points mark.

PSU first-year goalie Bjorn Ohlsson was stellar on the afternoon, as he has been all season. He recorded his fourth shutout of the season and stopped five shots on goal by WestConn.

PSU head coach Rob Wright was pleased with the way his team played with the rainy atmosphere, "Given the conditions, I thought that we did well to stay focused and get a hard fought victory," said Wright, "Semir took the first goal extremely well and held his nerve with the penalty. We have a bunch of injuries so it was good to see guys who have not seen a lot of time this season come in and play well."

Although coach Wright was pleased with his team's performance, he as most coaches, realizes that there is always room for improvement during the course of the season "The biggest thing is to get everyone fit and healthy. It is tough to work on our style of play when we have to keep changing thepersonnel."

PSU will play two more home games during this current three game home stand. On Wednesday, October 7 they will play under the lights starting at 6:00pm to take on Tufts College. On Saturday, October 10 PSU will match-up against Rhode Island College at 4:30 p.m. WestConn. will look to start a winning streak as they play on the road against Worcester State on Wednesday, October 7 and at home against UMass Boston on Saturday, October 10.
