Where's the Supergrass?

By Lauren Farnham
On November 20, 2009

According to Dictionary.com, Supergrass is "a high-quality marijuana." This may be, but Supergrass is also a British is also a four-man rock band, formed in Oxford in 1994. The band consists of two brothers, GaZ who sings lead vocals, Rob Coombes on keyboards, Mick Quinn on bass and Dan Goffey on drums. The band's first single, "Caught by the Fuzz" was a recount of the lead singer's experience with arrest for cannabis and this song embodies many of the themes the band still writes about today. Originally the band was to be called "Theodore Supergrass" with a strange idea behind it. Dan Goffey claims to have made up the name saying, ""Although the others will dispute it, it was me. We were Theodore Supergrass and the idea was the band would be a little black character, and we wouldn't ever have to do interviews. We'd get the questions in advance, script the answers and then animate Theodore Supergrass answering them. But it cost too much money." Their first album released in '94 with, "Should I Coco" which became a big success in Great Britain. The album became number one on the UK charts, and simultaneously had their single "Caught by the Fuzz" at number one for that week's top single charts. The band followed this successful album with heavy touring and their next album, "In it for the Money," which was equally successful. This album includes top songs such as "Late in the Day" and "Sun Hits the Sky." In 1999 Supergrass teamed up with Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets, to create the music video for their single, "Pumping on your Stereo." In the video Jim Henson created comical Muppet bodies with super long limbs. The music video ended up winning the award for the Best Music Video of the Year in Great Britain. The band has continued to successfully release albums and tour throughout Great Britain and Europe. In 2010 Supergrass will be releasing their next album entitled, "Release the Drones." The band also plans to release a cover album of covers similar to that of David Bowie's "Pin Ups." Supergrass hasn't had much success in the United States and is almost unheard of. Throughout Great Britain and most of Europe the band has found infamy with their lyrics of 'Supergrass,' drinking too much and jail experiences. This band is not going to be touring anywhere in the U.S. any time soon. If this band sounds interesting, songs such as "Za" and "Pumping on your Stereo" are recommended. Supergrass's most recent album, "Diamond Hoo Ha" is available on Amazon.com for $12.98.
